Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay lived with her Aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to become creative and drawn by the arts. She was a night nurse in order to give her aunt the time she needed during the day to indulge in writing, theatre and literature. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay recognized that art is powerful in promoting social activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who was social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. Although DuVernay spent her childhood in Compton and with her extended family, she spent every summer at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers she was in Selma to help inspire her upcoming film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. The school was home to University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for television journalism during her time as a college student. Her internship was with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned duty of looking after the residence and scrutinizing the rubbish of one members of the juries. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was handed, DuVernay chose to go on to a job in the field of publicity. DuVernay began her career working as a junior press assistant at a small film studio following her graduation from the college. Then she founded The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. In addition to PR her agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as those like the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
